The Southern California Black Walnut tree or Juglans californica continues to teach us many things about ourselves and our environment. The Northeast Los Angeles Black Walnut Day (NBWD) organizing committee welcomes you to its kick-off celebration at Ascot Hills Park, ’Ochuunga-El Sereno, Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) and 2023’s month-long events’ schedule.

This year we remember the Black Walnut’s ability to uplift us in land use and housing stability but also recognize its diversity, the tree’s multiple sexes, and resilience. The endemic tree to the Southland shows us what it is to survive under threat in an environment where 31% of its habitat(01) has been destroyed by urban development. NELA residents have felt the gut punch of gentrification, where nearly 60% of the population(02) are renters and have suffered housing instability in part from luxury hillside development. The Black Walnut has fought against these projects, such as the Eastern-Lombardy development of forty-two, one million dollar homes(03). Meanwhile, the Supreme Court and state governments dismantle the rights we have fought hard for, and the Republicans wage a culture war on LGBTQ people, among others, the Black Walnut teaches us how nature works and how to transform in its environment and survive. Celebrate the Black Walnut with us!
